1 cup pitted dates
1 cup boiling water
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup brown and white sugar
1 tablespoon shortening
1 egg beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup walnuts

Directions:
Directions:
1. Combine dates, boiling water, and baking soda. Let cool.
2. Cream brown and white sugar and shortening.
3. Add egg and vanilla.
4. Mix flour, salt, and walnuts and add to other ingredients.
5. Bake at 350 degrees for one hour.
