3/4 cup raisins
1/2 cup boiling water
1/2 cup shortening
1 ½ cup packed dark brown sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1/2 tsp allspice (or Chinese Five Spice)
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups apple sauce
2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 cup chopped walnuts
2 tsp baking soda

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350º. Grease and flour a 13x9x2 baking dish.

Combine raisins and boiling water. Set aside.

In a large bowl, beat shortening, sugar, salt and spices. Add eggs until creamy smooth and fluffy. Scrap bowl often. Blend in apple sauce, flour and walnuts.

Stir baking soda into raisin mixture. Add raisin mixture to batter and mix well. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake 40-45 min, or until toothpick comes out clean.
