"I have long believed that good food, good eating is all about risk. Whether we're talking about unpasteurized Stilton, raw oysters or working for organized crime 'associates,' food, for me, has always been an adventure."--Anthony Bourdain

Filling:

1/2 lb raw beef steak, diced small
1 c onion, chopped
1 lg T butter
salt and peppery to taste
1 c rutabagas, diced, optional
1 medium potato, diced
1 c carrots, chopped

Pie Dough:

1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/3 to 1/2 c shortening (butter or other fat)
1/4 c cold water (about)

Directions:
Directions:
Sift flour, salt and baking powder together; then mix, shape, roll as in directions. (This recipe make two pasties.)

For one pastie take half of the dough. Roll thin to shape and size of a pie plate. Pile half of the potato, onion, carrot, meat and if desired, rutabaga on half of the rolled pie dough, too within one inch of the edge. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and dot with butter. Fold the other half of the dough over the filling, press edges together well. Repeat for the other pastie. Place pasties in a pie plate. Cut slits in the top of each, pour 1 tsp hot water into the slit. Additional hot water should be poured into the slit occasionally to keep the pasties from drying out.

Bake at 400º for 45 minutes until well browned, then reduce heat to 350º for an additional 15 minutes.
