Personal Notes:
Grandma Phyllis always made these. She was a great cook. She used milk in hers. You can if you eat them right away. I have found that if they have to sit for any length of time I don't add milk. Many times, Mom would reuse the sauce and just add more onions and cucumbers. She loved her summer vegetables. Her beautiful blue eyes always seemed to smile and dance at the thought of summer and all its bounty.
She grew up in the tough years of the 1930s and 40s. Her father had a vegetable garden and strawberry garden. They spent many hours picking all sorts of fruits and vegetables. This produce helped them survive the lean years and made her one of the best harvesters I have ever met. As a child they would pick all wild berries from tree and ground and make them into sauce or jelly and jams. Nothing was ever wasted. It couldn't be. They had 8 children to feed! Uncle Buster, Uncle Dick, Uncle Keith, Uncle Jack, Aunt Gwen, Aunt Jean, Aunt Ione, and Mom. Grandpa Oscar and Grandma Mable. She always wore an apron and grandpa always had candy sticks.

Love you mom.
