"A man who was fond of wine was offered some grapes at dessert after dinner. "Much obliged," said he, pushing the plate aside; "I am not accustomed to take my wine in pills."--Jean Antheleme Brillat-Savarin, The Physiology of Taste

Well, the easiest way to make this happen begins with Krusteaz pancake mix. If you ever want the OLD ORIGINAL recipe from my Grandmother Falkner to my mother, I'll have to dig it out. It called for flour, salt, baking powder, etc. I haven't made the pancakes like that in 25+ years. So, buy a quart of buttermilk. (Not low-fat or modified, just BUTTERMILK). I'm guessing for the size of your family, pour 1/2 of it in a medium bowl (about 2 c). Sprinkle the top of the buttermilk with 1(level) t. BAKING SODA. Stir only lightly across the top to moisten the baking soda. Let sit for at least 5 minutes. It should start reacting by forming bubbles. When you've got some good action there, simply pour in enough (maybe 3 cups or so) Krusteaz to make a blobby batter. Add a little salt. Then thin it down, wayyy down with warm water. The thin batter will make thin, yummy pancakes with a kind of salty, almost bitter, buttermilk flavor. Good luck! Makes me want to make some! Wish I had some fresh buttermilk. (Don't use the powdered kind)
