½ cup water
2 packages active dry yeast
1¾ cup lukewarm milk
3 T. sugar
1 T. salt
2 T. shortening
6-7½ cups of flour

Directions:
Directions:
In a saucepan, warm the water to 110º-115º. Add yeast, shortening, milk, sugar and salt and mix thoroughly. Immediately add to flour and mix.

Kneed dough for 5 minutes. Place dough in a greased bowl. Grease the top of the dough and cover with a damp cloth. Let rise 1½ hours.

Punch dough down, shape into a ball again, and let rise 45 minutes more.

Divide dough into equal parts, shape into loaves, and put each into a greased loaf pan. Cover with damp cloth and let rise 1 hour.

Bake 30 minutes at 325º.

Dad would eat whatever we made, no matter how dense the bread turned out. He was so happy that we would try to make fresh bread. He always said the dense bread was the best for toasting.
