2 cups flour
1½ tsp baking powder
1 tsp cinnamon
¼ tsp salt
¼ tsp nutmeg
½ cup butter
¼ cup shortening
¾ cup sugar
1 egg
1 Tbsp orange or lemon juice

Preheat oven 325º F.

Stir together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, salt and nutmeg.

In a large mixer bowl beat butter and shortening 30 seconds to soften. Add sugar and beat until fluffy, add egg and juice, beat well.

Add flour mixture, and beat or stir until well mixed.

Divide dough in half, cover and chill at least 3 hours or until it is easy to handle.

Roll dough on lightly floured surface to ⅛ inch thickness. Cut with desired shape, use two sizes of straws to cut random holes in cookie dough, place on ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake 8-9 minutes.

When cookies are cool sift generously with powdered sugar.

I always make these at Christmas and double the recipe.

I use snowflake cookie cutters and don’t put the holes in with straws.
