½ cup pitted dates
⅓ tsp. baking soda
¼ cup hot water
2 oz. semi-sweet or bitter-sweet chocolate
4 oz. butter, softened
⅔ cup sugar
1 egg
½ tsp. vanilla
¾ cup flour
¼ tsp. salt
⅓ cup sour cream

For glaze:
6 Tbsp. icing sugar
1 Tbsp. cream (or milk)
2 tsp. brandy

Preheat the oven to 325ºF. Grease an 8" X 8" pan.

Chop the pitted dates by hand or in the food processor. (Be sure there are no pit pieces). Sprinkle the baking soda over the chopped dates in a small bowl & pour the hot water over them. Set aside.

Melt the chocolate. Cream the butter with the sugar. Beat in the egg, chocolate, vanilla & the dates with their liquid. Mix the flour & salt & add to the batter alternately with the sour cream. Pour into pan & bake 45 minutes. Cool on a rack.

To make the glaze: Mix the icing sugar with the cream. Add the brandy & stir till smooth. When the cake is completely cool, dribble the glaze in a lacy pattern over the cake. Serves 9-12.
