Ingredients: Pastry (for dumplings & top crust) 2 c. flour ⅔ c. shortening 1 tsp. salt 5 -6 tbsp ice water Blackberry filling: 1½ qt. Blackberries 1¾ qt. Water 1¼ c. Sugar

Directions:Pastry Blend first three ingredients together until course, like cornmeal. Then add water and mix well. Knead dough four or five times. Divide dough in half. 1st half of dough will be used for dumplings. Roll the dough out thin and cut into strips.
Then start the blackberry filling by combining the blackberries, water and sugar into a 4 quart pan And bring to a rolling boil. Then boil about five minutes longer. Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla flavoring then add dumplings wanted to time and star often after all the dumplings are dropped, turn heat down on low while you prepare the top crust.
Top crust Roll out second half of dough for top crust to cover a 9 x 13 pan. Pour blackberries and dumplings into the pan then cover with top crust. Brush the top crust with butter then sprinkle it with granulated sugar.
Place in 350º oven and bake till the top crust is a golden brown |
