Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 cup molasses
2 egg yolks
1 tsp salt
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp cloves
3/4 tsp ginger
4 cups flour

Stiff icing:
3 egg whites
1/2 tsp cream of tartar
3 3/4 to 4 cups powdered sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening and sugar. Add molasses, egg yolks, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Add spices. Add flour mixing together thoroughly. roll out in cookie sheet to 1/4" thick. Cut desired shapes with knife keeping edges as close together as possible. Bake 7-10 min. Don't want it too soft or will not stay standing. While hot, cut out shapes again.

Icing: Beat 3 egg whites until stiff. Add 1/2 tsp cream of tartar and 3 3/4 to 4 cups powdered sugar. Beat 7-10 min. Amount of powdered sugar depends on the stiffness of the icing. Icing must be stiff enough to hold it's shape, but soft enough to work with easily through a tube. Keep icing in an air tight container- hardens fast.
