Braided Fruit Bread Recipe

1 cake yeast
1/4 c lukewarm water
1 egg
1/2 c sugar
1/3 c melted shortening
2 c milk, scalded and cooled
1/2 t salt
1/2 c chopped raisins
1/2 c chopped citron
1/2 c chopped, blanched, almonds
8-10 c flour

Directions:
Directions:
Mix the eggs, sugar, shortening, milk, and salt, and 2 c flour. Add the yeast and water. Let rise for 1 hour. Add the rest of the flour and the fruits and nuts. Knead into a smooth and elastic dough.

Let rise until doubled.

Divide into 3 unequal parts and divide each part into 3 equal parts. Braid each part to make 3 unequal braids. Place the braids on top of each other with the smallest on top and pinch the ends together. Place onto a parchment lined baking sheet and let rise again until doubled.

Brush with glaze (see helpful tips in beginning of book) and bake in a hot oven for 10 minutes and then a moderate over for about 40 minutes or until center reaches 200F.

Ice when cool with thick pipeable powdered sugar glaze. (optional) (see helpful tips in beginning of book)
