Combine in bowl and let cool
12 oz chopped dates
1 cup boiling water
1 teaspoon baking soda

Cream together
1 cup sugar
2 tablespoons butter
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Combine
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt

Add the date mixture and the flour mixture alternately to the creamed mixture.

Bake in greased and floured loaf pan at 325 degrees for one hour or until toothpick comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pan.
