Dad and I started making Jerky when you were a baby. We did not have a dehydrator so we would season and marinate the meat and put wood toothpicks through it. Then we would hang the meat from the toothpicks on the oven racks at the lowest setting. A wooden spoon in the oven door kept it open a crack to help "dry" the meat. I would have to line the bottom with foil because it was a complete mess. When it was dry, we had to pull all of the toothpicks out of the meat.

It was a real advancement when we got our first dehydrator, a stack of round plastic trays with a heated fan. We loved Jerky so much we bought 2 of them!

I can't begin to tell you how excited we were when Grandpa and Grandma Linderer bought us a stainless steel dehydrator oven for our 25th anniversary. We can put 15 lbs of meat in it and have Jerky in 3 hours!

Jerky is the perfect snack for assemblies, road trips, camping, travelling to foreign countries, and gifts. We have many memories involving elk and beef jerky.
