1 c. flour
1/2 tsp salt
1/3 c chilled crisco (vegetable shortening)
1/4 c. ice water

Filling
7 Granny Smith apples cored/peeled/thinly sliced
1/2 c sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
Topping:
3/4 c brown sugar
3/4 c flour
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/3 cup chilled butter cut into small pieces



Directions:
Directions:
Place oven rack on lowest setting and heat oven to 400.
Prepare crust in medium chilled glass or metal bowl.
Mix flour, salt and using a pastry blender or 2 butter knives, cut shortening into flour until course crumbles form (pea size).
Add water 1 T at a time tossing gently with fork until dough forms
Shape into a disk and wrap in plastic, chilling for 30 minutes.

On a floured surface, using a floured rolling pin, roll dough into 12" circle to fit in Pie tin
Mix filling and spoon into crust.
Mix topping with pastry blender until crumbly then sprinkle over filling.

Bake 35 minutes. Cover pie crust with foil until last 10 minutes to prevent burning.

Brett loved this pie When he was a toddler he asked for this instead of cake for his birthday. The trick with the dough is to keep EVERYTHING cold. I chill the bowls, utensils etc. Marylee Berger said it is the trick to flaky crusts. She is right.
