1 tsp soda
1 C. Hot water
3 TBSP Shortening
1 C. Sugar
2 eggs
1 small pkg chopped dates
2 C. Flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla
½ C. Chopped nuts

Directions:
Directions:
Cut up dates in a bowl. Add hot water and soda. Let stand until cool. Cream sugar and shortening; add beaten eggs. Add sifted flour, salt, baking powder, and cinnamon. Combine this mixture with dates, vanilla, and nuts. Bake for 25 minutes at 350º. Cut in bars and cool or sprinkle with powdered sugar.
