½ c. butter flavored shortening
1 ½ c. sugar
2 eggs
3 T. instant cocoa
1-2 oz. red food color
2 ½ c. flour
dash of salt
1 c. buttermilk
1 T. vinegar
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Heat oven to 350º
Cream shortening, sugar, and eggs.
Make paste of coloring and cocoa, add to creamed mixture.
Sift flour and salt. Add alternately with buttermilk.
Mix vinegar, soda, and vanilla and add.
Pour into 2 8 inch pans.
Bake for 30 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.
 

Frosting

½ lb. butter
¾ c. water
1 T. vanilla
1 c. sugar
4 T. flour
dash of salt

Directions:

Cook flour and water over medium heat until it makes a ball of paste in the pan. Cool completely, not in the refrigerator. Cream butter, sugar, and salt until fluffy. Beat in flour mixture and vanilla. Beat at high speed 3-5 minutes until fluffy and white.
 

Put it Together

Let cakes cool in pans for 15 minutes.
Turn out onto racks to cool completely.
Frost as desired when cool.

Dad made this for a few birthdays. Its always been my favorite.
This works great for cupcakes too, just shorten the baking time.
