Date Filling:
Combine in a saucepan
1 cup chopped dates
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1/2 cup water
Bring to boil and cook until dates are soft enough to be mashed with a fork (about 5 minutes). The mixture should be the consistency of jam.
Set aside to cool.

Crumb Mixture:
Blend or sift together
1 cup Pre-Sifted All-purpose Flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/8 teaspoon salt

Cut in
1 cup butter or margarine

Then blend in
1 cup lightly-packed brown sugar
2 cups rolled oats

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 325º.
Press half of this mixture over bottom of a greased 8" square pan. Cover evenly with cooled Date Filling. Then cover with remaining Crumb Mixture and pat until smooth.
Bake in preheated 325º oven for 35 to 40 minutes or until light golden brown.
Cool before cutting into squares.

I double the date filling in the single batch recipe.
