Spanish Bars Recipe

4 cups water
1 cup shortening
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp ground cloves
1 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup nuts (optional)
2 cups raisins
2 cups sugar
4 cups flour
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp allspice
2 eggs (beaten)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Add water to raisins and simmer for 10 minutes; add the shortening and allow the mixture to cool. Sift together the sugar, soda, flour, ground cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and salt. To the flour mixture add nuts (if desired) and and the raisins mixture. Blend together well. Add beaten eggs and stir well. Bake in a 9x13 inch pan for 30 to 35 minutes. Once glazed and cooled, cut into bars.
You can glaze if you want. Mix 1 cup confectioner sugar and 3 tbsp milk (may need a little bit more of milk). Once mixed, Pour glaze over bars.
