Ingredients:  
1 ½ cups flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1 cup shortening
1 cup brown sugar, packed
½ cup granulated sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 eggs
2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
1 12-oz package semisweet chocolate chips
1 cup pecans or walnuts (Cathy's addition)

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350ºF
Grease baking sheets
Combine dry ingredients
Beat together wet ingredients, adding eggs at the end until fluffy
Gradually beat in dry ingredients plus the oats into wet ingredients
Stir in chocolate chips and nuts
Drop well-rounded teaspoons on baking sheet
Bake 8-10 minutes or until golden

Once my Mom made this recipe once in the 90s (while Clinton was First Lad) she never went back. She even kept the original newspaper clipping! Politics aside, this is a dang good chocolate chip cookie recipe and one I am always requesting from my mom. I love her addition of pecans. Just delicious!
