2 large pillows of shredded wheat
2 cups Raisin Bran or 1 cup Bran Buds
1 cup boiling water
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 eggs
2 1/2 cups flour
2 1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 pt buttermilk

Crush the 2 pillows of shredded wheat and place in a medium bowl. Add 2 cups Raisin Bran. Pour in 1 cup boiling water. Stir and set aside. Cream 1/2 cup shortening and 1 1/2 cup sugar. Beat in vanilla and eggs one at a time. Add the cereal mixture and stir gently by hand. Sift together 2 1/2 cups flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Add flour mixture alternating with one pint buttermilk. Stir lightly by hand. Store overnight covered in refrigerator. Bake in 375 degree oven for 20 minutes. Batter will keep up to 6 weeks.

Always want more raisins. Substituted 2 cups active sourdough for buttermilk and reduced flour 1/2 cup. Added 1 cup raisins and 1 cup mashed ripe bananas. If adding bananas, reduce sugar 1/2 cup.

I’ve also used 1 cup of sourdough and 2 cups hot water, no buttermilk and 1/2 cup less flour.
