1/2 C shortening
1/2 C butter
1 C brown sugar

1 egg
1/2 C molasses

2 1/4 C flour
2 tsp soda
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp each, ginger, cloves and salt

sugar for rolling (bigger sugar crystals like raw sugar are beautiful)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375º

Mix shortening and butter
Add brown sugar and cream tog. well

Add egg and molasses, mix well

In separate bowl, combine dry ingredients

Add to molasses mixture

Scoop 1" dough ball and roll in sugar - bake that one test cookie first!
Add more flour if necessary, if cookie is too flat.
Place dough balls 2" apart on cookie sheet
Bake 8-10 minutes
