Bread Pudding with Bourbon Sauce - JoAnn Smith

1 loaf New Orleans French bread
1 quart whole milk
1 cup sugar
3 T butter
3 eggs
2 tsp vanilla
Optional: 1 cup raisins, 1 cup pecans...one or both

Directions:
Directions:
Dice bread into small cubes. Soak bread in milk for 15-30 minutes.
Add beaten eggs and sugar. (Raisins and Pecans, if desired.
Stir well. Butter a 9 x13 baking dish. Pour bread mixture into baking dish. Next pour melted butter over the bread mixture.
Bake at 325º until firm in middle, approximately 45-50 minutes
 

Bourbon Sauce

½ cup sugar
¼ cup water
2 T butter
1-2 jiggers bourbon

Directions:
Directions:
Cook sugar, water and butter until dissolved. Remove from heat and add bourbon. When ready to serve pour (warm) bourbon sauce over a slice of bread pudding.
 

Bread Pudding with Rum Sauce - Clovis Sylvester

1 loaf French bread
4 cups milk
4-5 eggs
2 cups sugar
1 small can pet evaporated milk
1-2 tsp vanilla

Directions:

Cut bread into small cubes. Pour the milk over the bread and let soak for 1-2 hours.

Beat eggs, sugar, evaporated milk and vanilla. Pour over bread. Bake at 350º for 45-50 min or until center is firm.
 

Rum Sauce

1 egg
1 cup sugar
1 cup butter
¼ cup rum

Directions:

Combine egg, sugar, and butter. Cook over medium, stir every 15 seconds for 2-3 min.
Remove from heat. Add rum.

When ready to serve, pour warm sauce over a slice of bread pudding.

4 cups milk
3-4 cups stale bread crumbs
¾ cup sugar
1 T butter
¼ tsp salt
4 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
¾ cup raisins
1 T bourbon (optional)

Preheat oven to 350º
Bake for 70-75 min.

In an 8 cup microwaveable bowl, heat milk in microwave for about 3 min stirring occasionally. Do not boil. Cut the bread into small pieces. When milk is warmed, soak bread in milk for 5 min. Add sugar, butter, salt. Lightly beat eggs in a greased bowl. Pour milk and bread mixture over the eggs and mix. Add vanilla and bourbon. Stir in raisins. Place bowl in a pan with about 1 inch hot water and bake.

½ cup sugar
1 beaten egg yolk
2 T water
2 T bourbon

In a 2 cup glass measuring cup, melt butter in the microwave. Stir in sugar, egg yolk and water. Microwave until sugar dissolves and mixture boils. (Watch carefully as it does not take long.) Remove from heat and stir in bourbon. Serve warm or cool.

I have not made or tasted any of these recipes, so I can't tell you which one is better. By the amount of booze, butter and sugar, you can't go wrong with any of the recipes! Ellie Perret says hers is more like a custard. They each told me they had the best recipe for bread pudding so I included all three! So here you go kids...a bread pudding baking challenge!
