2 c flour
2 c sugar
1 c Crisco shortening
1 c water
4 T cocoa powder
½ c buttermilk
1 t baking soda
2 eggs, slightly beaten

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 deg F.

Mix flour, sugar and cocoa in bowl. In small saucepan, boil shortening and water. Add to flour and sugar mixture. Stir. Combine buttermilk and soda; slightly beat eggs. Add these to cocoa mixture and stir with spoon until incorporated. Grease and flour pan. Bake 30 to 35 minutes. Cool before frosting.

4 T cocoa powder
6 T milk
1 box powdered sugar
1 t vanilla
½ c nuts, chopped (optional)

On low heat, melt shortening in saucepan. Add cocoa. Stir. Add milk and sifted powdered sugar. Add vanilla and mix until smooth. Add nuts and mix. Cool before adding to cake.

Everyone ALWAYS loved going to Grandma's for her chocolate chip cookie bars (made with shortening) and this chocolate cake! Grandma was a bit of a "rascal" with a twinkle in her eye. Is this the real recipe? Sure hope so! YUMMY!!!
