1 1/2 cups butter
2 cups brown sugar
3 1/2 cups flour
1 egg, beaten
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
3/4 tsp. ground cloves
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. allspice
1/2 tsp. ground ginger

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter and sugar; add remaining ingredients and stir to form a very stiff dough. Shape dough into a cylinder with a diameter equal to the desired cookie size; cover and chill thoroughly. Slice chilled dough; place on a lightly greased cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes. Store in a tightly covered container.
Variation: Press well-chilled dough into molded cookie molds.
