Combine in Plastic Bowl:
1 ½ cups warm water
1 tbsp. sugar
1 ½ tsp. salt
1 tbsp. oil or shortening

Sprinkle 1 tbsp. dry yeast on top. Dissolve. Stir in 4 cups sifted flour with a wooden spoon. (May not take 4 full cups: add 2 first and then add a little at a time) Cover and let rise 10 minutes, stir down. Repeat 6 times. (60 minutes). Roll dough on floured board ½ inch thick. Roll one side up to another side to form a long loaf. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet longwise. Slit top 3 or 4 times with a sharp knife or scissors. Let rise for 30 minutes. Bake 400 degrees for 25-30 minutes. This bread will take 2 ½ hours from start to finish. Note: While rising for 30 minutes, cover with a cloth, also when cooling.
