Date and Nut Bread Recipe

2 C dates
1½ C boiling water
1¾ C sugar
1 egg
2¾ C flour
½ tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking soda
2 T melted butter
1 tsp. vanilla
1 C chopped walnuts

Directions:
Directions:
Pour water over dates and let stand until softened. Mix sugar, butter, egg and vanilla. Add the dates and water, flour, salt and baking soda. (I add nuts by hand.) Pour in greased loaf pan and mini loaf pan. Bake at 350º for approximately 1 hour. Mini loaf will take less time. Let stand 15 minutes.

This recipe is from Grandma Sanderson. It was a great favorite with her and her sisters. It was popular in the 1960's to serve with cream cheese. McCurdy's was known for having this in their downstairs restaurant. Moist and delicious.
