1 c. chopped dates
1 t. baking soda
1 c. boiling water

1/2 c. butter
1 c. sugar
1 beaten egg
1 1/3 c. flour
1 t. baking powder
1 t. vanilla

5 T. brown sugar
1 T. butter
1 t. vanilla
3 T. cream
1 c. coconut

Directions:
Directions:
Place first ingredients in small pan and cool slightly.
Mix butter, sugar, and egg well. Add to date mixture and mix again. Add flour, baking powder and vanilla. Bake in 9x9 inch pan at 350'.
Boil sugar, cream, and butter for 3 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in coconut and vanilla. When cake is baked, spread topping on and return to oven until top is browned.
