"A man who was fond of wine was offered some grapes at dessert after dinner. "Much obliged," said he, pushing the plate aside; "I am not accustomed to take my wine in pills."--Jean Antheleme Brillat-Savarin, The Physiology of Taste

Personal Notes:
Mary Thomas: This was my Mother's recipe (Katherine "Kate" Reynolds) and I sometimes call it "Buttermilk Cake" which sounds more appealing. Likely in her early days with lack of refrigeration there was often milk on hand that had gone sour and this was a great way to use it. Most of the time I use buttermilk or you can just add a tablespoon of vinegar to regular milk and make your own sour milk. A good snack cake just to eat a slice out of your hand.
