1 stick butter
1 1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 T cocoa
2 oz red food color
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp salt
1 cup buttermilk
2 c flour
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 T vinegar

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter, sugar and eggs.
Make paste of cocoa and coloring and add to above mixture.
Mix salt to vanilla and add to above.
Add the buttermilk.
Add the flour and mix well.
Mix the baking soda and vinegar and fold in (don't beat).
Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes in 2 -9 inch pans.

I always made this cake for Valentine's day. For many years I would use heart shaped pans and later just round ones. It really made the day special.
