Baklava Recipe

Pastry:

1 lb. of phyllo pastry sheets
1 ½ cups (¾ lb.) unsalted, melted butter
1 lb. walnut meats-finely chopped
5 tbs. sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
dash of clove

-13" x 9" x 2 " pan used

Syrup:
3 ½ cups water
3 cups sugar
few whole cloves
several slices of orange and lemon

Directions:

Mix walnuts, sugar, cinnamon and clove and set aside.

Begin to layer pastry sheets in baking pan.

Brush every second sheet with butter.

After building up 10 layers, add ⅓ of walnut mixture.

Add another 6 layers of pastry and ⅓ of walnut mixture. Repeat; add additional pastry remembering to brush every second sheet with butter.

With sharp knife, cut diamond pattern across top of Baklava.

Heat remaining butter (½ cup left), until very hot and beginning to brown. Pour evenly over the top.

Sprinkle with a few drops of water and bake at 350º for 20 min.

Cool and pour hot syrup over top evenly. Feel free to sprinkle with a little more chopped walnuts or even some chopped pistachios.

Syrup:

Combine all of the syrup ingredients in a pan and bring to a boil.

Reduce and simmer for 30 min.

Strain. (Cook longer if it seems watery.)

Preparation time 40 minutes
(if preparing syrup and pastry simultaneously)

There's nothing like homemade baklava!

Although this recipe might seem long, it is actually really very easy.

The hardest part is chopping the walnuts!
