1 cup sugar, plus ¼ cup for topping
1 cup flour
1½ tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
1 cup milk
1 stick butter, melted (in a separate bowl)
2 cups blackberries

Directions:
Directions:
Whisk dry ingredients together. Whisk in milk until just blended. Pour this mixture into the bowl with the melted butter and stir until mixed. Pour into a greased baking dish. Distribute the berries (or other fruit) over the batter and sprinkle sugar on top. Bake at 350º for 50-60 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbly.

On a visit to Pickran Circle in Durham, Granddaddy Richardson picked some blackberries from a patch in an empty lot next door and I made him this cobbler. It could be made with a various other fruits -- whatever is in season.
