1/2 c. Crisco®
1 1/1 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 oz. red food coloring
2 tbsp. dark cocoa
2 1/4 c. cake flour
1 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. pure vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tbsp. white vinegar
1 c. buttermilk

Frosting

2 sticks of unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
1 c. Crisco® shortening
2 c. powered sugar
3 tbsp. flour
1 1/3 c. milk
1 tbsp. pure vanilla

Preheat oven to 350º
Mix vinegar and baking soda in a small bowl and set to the side. Cream shortening and sugar until very creamy. Add eggs and mix well. In a separate bowl, make a paste with the food coloring and cocoa. Add paste to the creamed mixture. Whisk cake flour and salt together. Alternate flour and buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour. Add vanilla, and the vinegar and baking soda mixture. Pour batter evenly into 2 8in. round baking pans sprayed with baking spray. Bake for 30 minutes. Insert a toothpick in the center checking to see if the cakes are done. Cool in the cake pans for 10 minutes. Turn cakes out on a cooling rack to finish cooling.

Frosting

In a small saucepan whisk flour and milk over medium heat until the mixture is thick. Cool completely. In a stand mixer mixing bowl, cream butter and shortening. Slowly mix in the powered sugar and vanilla. Add the thickened flour and milk mixture and beat on high until the frosting is like a whipped cream consistency.

Place first layer on a cake plate or stand and frost. Place the second layer on and frost the top and sides covering the layered cake.
