1 c. Water
2 pkgs. Yeast
4 1/2 c. Flour (1 cup then later 3½ cups)
1/2 c. Butter
1/2 c. Sugar
2 or 3 Eggs beaten
1 t. Salt
1 t. Lemon juice

Directions:
Directions:
Combine and let stand 3-5 minutes: 1 cup of water and 2 packages of yeast. Sift and stir in 1 cup of flour. Cover and let raise about 30 minutes. Beat until soft butter and sugar. Add gradually and blend until light and creamy 2 or 3 eggs. A 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of lemon concentrate juice. Beat this into the sponge (water, flour, yeast). Add 3 ½ cups of flour. Beat dough for approximately 5 minutes. Cover and let rise one hour. The roll out and cut into doughnuts. Let rise until double in size. Using large spatula slide under complete donut and put into hot grease (hot fat should be bubbly and can be tested with a small piece of dough). Fry 1 side and flip over then fry the other side. Frost with a thin glaze of powdered sugar and milk.

This is the only recipe of Grandma Gregg's that I have in her handwriting. It brings back memories of hot baths, hot coffee, and wonderful visits with Grandma.
