Ginger Bread House Recipe

For Gingerbread:
2 3/4 cup sifted flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp ginger
3 tsp baking powder
1 tsp cinnamon
1/8 tsp ground cloves
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup oil
1 egg
2/3 c molasses

For Royal icing
3 egg whites - at room temperature
1 lb. powdered sugar
1/2 tsp Cream of Tartar

For Gingerbread:
Sift dry ingredients together
Cream brown sugar and oil, add egg and molasses
Stir in dry ingredients
Press this mixture into a greased cookie sheet. Cookie sheet must have sides
Bake at 325º for 30 minutes

Cut the gingerbread while hot. After cutting your shapes - let it cool and remove from pan. Let your house pieces dry out for at least 12 hours

For Royal Icing:
Combine ingredients, beat at high speed for 7-10 minutes.
This icing is very quick drying, so keep covered with a damp cloth.
Use icing to "glue" house pieces together

To make trees - use the royal icing - tint it with green food coloring
Use a leaf tip and apply icing to sugar ice cream cones.
Set cone on a bottle, sprinkle tree with confectioners sugar
Let dry

About Cream of Tartar:
It is when the Cream of Tartar is added to any icing that the icing becomes hard,
It makes the icing more useful for "no-edible" projects
They are edible - but weren't meant to be......
