Cake:
3 cups sugar
½ cup shortening
2 sticks butter, softened
5 eggs
3 cups all purpose flour, sifted
½ tsp. salt
½ tsp. baking powder
½ cup cocoa
1 ¼ cups milk
2 tsp. vanilla flavoring

Frosting (optional):
2 cups sugar
½ cup cocoa
1 stick butter
½ cup milk
Pinch of salt
1 tsp. vanilla flavoring

Directions:
Directions:
Cream sugar, shortening and butter.
Add eggs one at a time, mixing well.
Sift dry ingredients together 3 times.
Alternately add milk and dry ingredients to sugar mixture.
Add vanilla
Bake in greased and floured tube pan at 325º for 1 hour and 20-30 minutes.
Remove from pan immediately.

To make frosting:
Boil ingredients 1 minute or longer until thickened
Remove from heat and add vanilla, stirring well before pouring over cooled cake.

Mrs. Posey was a good friend of Granny's and was an accomplished baker. She frequently made cakes for birthdays, wedding and other occasions. She gave this recipe to Granny and we loved for Granny to make it. She made the frosting sometimes but often served it with the cake only.
