2 cups flour
2 teaspoon baking powder
2 tablespoons spoon butter
1 cup maas or yogurt

1 cup desiccated coconut

Syrup
1 cup sugar
1 cup water

2 Rub butter into sifted dry ingredients
Add maas and mix Into a soft dough

2 Cover in cling flim and rest for 2 hours

3 Prepare syrup by boiling sugar in water

4 Roll dough out and plait
Fry in hot oil

5 Dip in prepared syrup

6 Place 1 cup desiccated coconut in a bowl to roll koeksisters in after dipping in syrup .

There 2 types of koeksusters in South Africa. The Afrikaner version which is braided
and the Cape Malay version which is spicy and shaped like large eggs.
‘Maas’’ refers to a fermented milk that tastes like yogurt or cottage cheese made in South Africa. The term is derived from a Zulu/Xhosa word ‘Amasi’
