4½ cups While Milk
1 cup Sugar
⅓ cup Cornstarch
½ tsp. Salt
5 large Eggs Yolks, beaten
2 tsp. Vanilla Extract

Directions:
Directions:
Heat 4 cups of milk in a large saucepan over medium heat until steaming. Whisk the sugar, cornstarch and salt in a large bowl. Whisk in egg yolks and ½ cup of milk together. Once combine add 2 cups of hot milk in the bowl slowly, whisk it together. Once combine add it slowly back into saucepan. Cool over medium heat, whisking constantly, until it has thickened to a pudding like consistency. Remove from heat and add vanilla. Cool slightly, stirring it occasionally to prevent a skin from forming. Cover with plastic and refrigerate for 4 hours. Before serving stir vigorously until smooth and creamy.

I have some nice alternatives to get different flavor profiles. You can use an extract if you like. Like cherry or orange. You can garnish with fruit, plain or macerated. If it's a Christmas Pudding, add peppermint and top with - crushed or powder - candy canes.
