Basic Smoothies

WINTERTIME:
6 frozen strawberries
1/2 frozen banana
12 chunks canned pineapple
1/2 cup milk

SUMMERTIME:
6 fresh strawberries
1 frozen banana
1 peach or nectarine
1/2 cup milk

Directions:
Directions:
Take the banana out of the freezer while you prepare the other ingredients. Cut the frozen banana into chunks and put in the food processor. Add the remaining fruit and process until blended. Pour in milk until desired thickness. Taste and adjust sweetness.

Optional: Add 2 tablespoons orange juice concentrate

You can make smoothies in your blender, but it will require more milk.
 

Freezing Fruit

BANANAS: Peel ripe bananas, wrap in waxed paper, put in single layer to freeze. Once frozen, transfer to a zip-lock bag.

PEACHES AND NECTARINES: Cover a cookie sheet with wax paper or parchment paper. Wash fruit, cut in half and remove pit. Cut into slices. Place on prepared cookie sheet in single layer to freeze. Once frozen, transfer to a zip-lock bag.

STRAWBERRIES: Rinse, dry, remove stem. Put on a cookie sheet in single layer to freeze. Once frozen, transfer to a zip-lock bag

My kids love smoothies. It is a great way for them to get their fruit too. Basically you put fresh or canned fruit, frozen fruit, milk and/or juice in a blender or food processor and whirl away. You can add sugar or ice cream for a sweeter drink. You can make them thin or thick enough to substitute for ice cream. Sometimes I add protein powder for extra nutrition. I have listed a few recipes to get you started. There is no wrong way or right way, just do it your way! You can make Food Processor Smoothies in the blender, but they will need more liquid.
