Ingredients:
1 cup butter
2 cups sugar
3 cups sifted flour
4 eggs
4 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Cream the butter and cream in the sugar until fluffy. Add the eggs. Sift the flour with the salt and baking powder, add alternately with the milk and vanilla. When smooth pour into 3 8 or 9 inch round pans or into 1 larger rectangular pan. Bake in a moderate 350 degree oven for 25 minutes or until the cake springs back when touched lightly with a fingertip. Cool on a rack for a few minutes, then loosen from the pan and turn out on a plate to cool.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
This is one of my favorite cakes and all my grandchildren have learned to make it. One of the most popular variations is the spice 1-2-3-4 cake: Add 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp nutmeg, 1/2 tsp ground cloves and 1 T cocoa to the dry ingredients. With this I like to use a caramel frosting.
