Directions: |
Directions:Order bread, sliced lengthwise, ahead of time. All meat and cheese should be thinly sliced. To make: Roll each slice of bread flat with a rolling pin. Cream all spread ingredients (it should be thin, but not at all runny). Spread a thin layer of spread on bread. FOR SAVORY: Put meat, 1 slice at a time, alternating with cheese, lengthwise. You can put thinly sliced pickles or whole cocktail onions on once, in a line across the width of the bread. Starting at short end, roll up tightly. Wrap tightly in foil and freeze. FOR SWEET: Thinly slice guava paste and cheese; alternate on bread; cherries can be added several times in a line across bread. Wrap as above. Take out of freezer 1-2 hours before cutting. Make sure they are still partially frozen. Slice with electric knife. |

Notes: This recipe is at Karen's request. The next time I go to Ocala, we plan to make them. Anyone interested can join us! It is much easier to show, than to write! They are really fun to make, and very pretty, especially if you use several colors of bread. Publix used to make Pullman loaves in colors, white and whole wheat. I haven't made these in a number of years, so I am estimating the amounts.
This is a recipe my Daddy taught me to make. He had a catering business in Miami and catered large parties. I made thousands of them back in the day. We also made them for many family showers and weddings.
