½ cup sugar
¼ tsp nutmeg
2 cups thinly sliced apples
2 cups sifted all purpose flour
3 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
¾ cup sugar
½ cup shortening
¾ cup milk
1 egg
¾ firmly packed brown sugar

Directions:

Rub 9" bottom and sides of frying pan or square cake pan liberally with shortening. Sprinkle the bottom with ½ cup of sugar mixed with nutmeg. Cover with thinly sliced apples.

In mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt, and ¾ cup of sugar. With a pasty blender, cut in shortening until broken into fine particles.

Beat egg with milk until well blended, should be light yellow. Add egg mixture to dry mixture Stir gently to make a lumpy batter, but do not leave any chunks of dry ingredients. Spoon batter over apples in the pan. Sprinkle with with brown sugar. Bake in oven at 350ºF for 45 minutes.

When cool invert pan onto plate.
