1/2 cup shortening (we replaced this with 1/4 cup butter)
1/2 cup butter (SALTED)
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 tsp baking soda
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
2.5 cups all purpose flour
2 cups semisweet chocolate pieces
1.5 cups chopped walnuts/pecans/hazelnuts (optional)

Directions:
Directions:
1. Place the butter (and shortening if you have some) into a bowl and beat it with an
electrical mixer on medium-high for 30 seconds.
2. Add granulated sugar, brown sugar, and baking soda and beat in with the mixture till
till they combine together. Scrape down parts stuck to the walls of the bowl.
3. Beat in the eggs and vanilla till combined.
4. Beat in as much of the flour as possible til combined, stir in the remaining with a
wooden spoon.
5. Stir in chocolate pieces and nuts if used.
6. Make each cookie a spoon full
7. Bake in 375 degree oven 8-10 minutes on parchment paper cookie sheet. Or check
for when the edges are lightly brown. Transfer to wire rack to cool.

Recommended to half the quantities, makes about 24 total.

Make sure the butter is salted, otherwise it will taste very weird.
Ask if the people you're cooking for would prefer nuts in their cookies because this seems to be a very controversial thing.
