I entered this with tears in my eyes. My mother had beautiful handwriting. I am typing this from a recipe card that I can hardly read.Grandma had beautiful handwriting but her 10 year health struggle left her unable penmanship with a lot to be desired. That really upset her. Grandma Phyllis was a very strong woman. Never complained no matter what she faced.

This recipe was one of her mother's old standbys. Grandma Phyllis loved her mother dearly and served her in any capacity she could through all of Grandma Phyllis' young years and up to her death. A side note, Mom, Grandma Phyllis, got her first job when she was 9. She was very responsible at a very young age. She was an excellent seamstress, and employee.

They were both wonderful cooks. My grandmother never had running water or an inside bathroom. The water pump outdoors served as great fun to us kids when we visited. I think we were allowed to bring water in for cooking and drinking. We had a beautiful white enamel pan rimmed in red and a white enamel ladle to drink from. We considered it great fun to get fresh ice cold water, bring it in the house, chew our Dentyne gum Grandpa would give us and quickly take a sip of that ice cold water. The flush of ice rolling over our tongues and down our throats was so refreshing.

Grandpa Oscar and Grandma Mable had 9 children. One died by fire. Grandma left the house for a short minute to borrow some laundry soap. When she came back a coal from the fire had shot into the baby's bed and started a fire. He (Jim) died from his burns.
