1 cup sugar
2 cups lard
1 tsp anise seed
2 eggs
6 cups sifted flour
3 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1/4 cup water
Topping:
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 cup sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Cream lard by hand thoroughly. Add sugar and anise seed. Beat eggs and add to lard mixture; blend until light and fluffy. Sift flour with baking powder and salt and add to first mixture. Add water and knead until well mixed. Roll 1/2 inch thick and cut into fancy shapes. Roll top of each cookie in a mixture of sugar and cinnamon. Bake in a moderate oven until slightly brown. ⅜

While visiting Tia Elena, she made these and we asked for the recipe. She handed me a page from a December 1961 “New Mexico Electric Newsletter “ and said we could keep it. I still have the page! It also has recipes for carne adobada, pozole (sic), empanaditas and empanadas. Free electric frying pan if claimed by Jan. 1, 1962!
