Ingredients:
Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups sifted flour
1 tsp salt
3/4 cup lukewarm water
1 egg
1 tbsp melted butter
6 apples
1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup blanched almonds
1/2 - 3/4 cup sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
2 tbsp butter

Directions:
Directions:
1. Sift flour once, measure and re-sift with the salt into a mixing bowl. Make a well in the center.
2. Combine the water, egg and melted butter and pour into the well gradually, stirring in a circular motion from the inside to the outside of the bowl until all the flour has been moistened and the dough is stiff.
3. Place on a lightly floured board and knead until the dough is shiny. Cover and let stand 15 minutes.
4. Meanwhile, peel, core and slice apples, add the slivered almonds, the raisins, cinnamon and sugar and toss together lightly. Roll and stretch the dough to paper thinness. Spread the apple mixture over the dough, dot with butter and roll like a jelly roll.
5. Place on a long shallow pan, spread with an additional 4 tbsp of butter and bake in 350 F oven for 1 hour, or until the dough is lightly browned and the apples are tender.
Note – If dough is rolled and stretched over a tea towel, the edge of the cloth can be lifted to facilitate rolling of the strudel dough.

Personal Notes:
It would seem daunting, but not to Betty - this was a well-used recipe from the Hearthside Cookbook.
