3 egg whites
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp cream of tartar
1 cup sifted sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp vinegar
1 tsp water

Directions:
Directions:
1. Add the salt and cream of tartar to the egg whites and beat until they will hold in soft peaks. Add the sugar, a tablespoon at a time, until half has been added.
2. Then add vanilla, vinegar and water. Beat well, then continue to add the remaining sugar and beat until the mixture has good piling quality.
3. Drop onto a lightly greased baking sheet in mounds and make a shallow indentation on the top of each.
4. Bake in a very slow often of 225 F for 1-1 1/4 hours. This will make 6-8 meringues.
* The outside should be delicately crisp and the inside soft and spongy. Serve with whipped cream, ice cream, sauce, sweetened berries or sliced peaches.
