MIX together thoroughly..................................1/3 cup of shortening
1 cup brown sugar
1 and 1/2 cups dark molasses
Stir in................................................................ 1/2 cup cold water
Sift together and stir in.......................................6 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoon ginger
1 teaspoon cloves
1 teaspoon cinnamon
Stir in..................................................................2 teaspoons soda dissolved in 3 tablespoons cold water

Directions:
Chill dough. Roll out very thick. Cut with 2 and 1/2 inch round cutter. Place far apart on lightly
greased baking sheet.


Bake until, when touched with finger, no imprint remains.

temp 350 (medium oven)
time 15 to 18 minutes
amount 2 and 2/3 fat puffy cookies

ICING......................................................................1 cup sifted confectioners sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Add enough milk or water to make easy to spread
about 1 and 1/2 tablespoons
Color with food coloring, if desired
