2 T (1/4 stick) butter
1 large onion, chopped
1 c chopped celery
1 c chopped peeled carrots
1 1/2 pounds smoked pork hocks (or bacon)
1 t dried leaf marjoram (or fresh equivalent)
1 1/2 c green split peas
8 c water

Directions:
Directions:
Put it all together in a heavy pot. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and cook, stirring often on a simmer, until peas are soft.

Some people puree the soup but I like it chunkier.
