Directions:
Heat oven to 375º. Stir together, flour, the first 3/4 sugar, set aside.
In a large mixer bowl, beat egg whites with cream of tartar and salt until foamy. Add the second 3/4 of a cup of sugar; 2 Tbsp. at a time, beating on high speed until meringue holds stiff peaks. Gently fold in vanilla. Sprinkle flour sugar mixture, 1/4 cup at a time over meringue, folding in gently just until flour-sugar mixture disappears. Put batter into ungreased tube pan, 10x4 inches. Gently cut through batter to get rid of any bubbles.
Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until top springs back when touched lightly with finger. Invert the pan on upside down bowl; let hang until cake is completely cooled. Loosen edges with butter knife around edge to get cake out of pan when cooled.
