pound dried navy beans
3 quarts water
Ham bone with some meat
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup celery. chopped
salt and pepper to taste
carrots if desired

Directions:
Directions:
Soak beans overnight in water. Drain the beans and keep water and add hot water to make 3 quarts. Put water, beans and ham bone in a large kettle. Bring to a boil and simmer for 2 hours after boiling. Add onion, celery, and carrot if desired and simmer 1 more hour. Remove ham bone and take off ham. Toss the bone and put ham back in the soup. if too thick, add a little more boiling water.

Linden had a new experience with my Dad's ham and bean soup. He learned to enjoy it with Mother's homemade buns. David, Donna, and I grew up on bean soup. Mother always said she would rather crochet than cook so daddy started making bean soup.
